Sorry, that’s not right.
Wentletraps are small snails with beautiful shells, and they are, in fact, named after the Dutch word for spiral staircase! But you won’t find any in the Delaware River—they only live in saltwater. (At least seven species live off the coast of New Jersey, though!) The mollusks you’re more likely to find in the Delaware are freshwater mussels. In fact, when DRWC and the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary conducted ecological research on this pier and the surrounding area before it became a park, they discovered two species of mussel that had previously been considered extinct this far south on the river!
