Northern long-eared bats are endangered in Pennsylvania due to white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that’s killed millions of North American bats and is considered one of the worst modern wildlife diseases. Only 1% of long-eared bats in Pennsylvania have survived, possibly due to individual preference for hibernating alone, rather than in cave colonies where the fungus spreads rapidly from bat to bat. This pier is not intended to provide habitat for them because they live in forests.
