This historical marker commemorates both a famous artist and perhaps his most spectacular work, an enormous mosaic that you can find in the lobby of the Curtis Building, behind you (if it’s open). It was made more than 100 years ago made from 100,000 pieces of glass in 260 colors, each hand-fired by Tiffany Studios and assembled by 30 artisans over the course of a year. If the lobby is closed right now, it’s worth a return visit—this piece is so beloved that it was saved from destruction by public outcry in 1998, and became Philadelphia’s first designated “historic object.”
